Injury inflicted by Nana on armed robber ruled as self-defence

Former After School member and actress  Nana subdued a robber who broke into her home, and the injuries inflicted by Nana and her daughter on the robber during the attack were ruled as self-defense.

On the 22nd, the Guri Police Department announced that they plan to send Mr. A, a man in his 30s who was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and assault, to the prosecution on the 24th.

Mr. A is accused of breaking into Nana’s home in Achon-dong, Guri-si with a weapon around 6:00 AM on the 15th, threatening and injuring Nana and her daughter while demanding money.

It is reported that he climbed up to the veranda using a ladder he had prepared, opened the unlocked door, and entered the house. When he found Nana’s mother inside, he strangled and injured her.

Nana woke up after hearing her mother’s screams and tried to stop him. After a physical altercation, the mother and daughter grabbed Mr. A’s arm, immobilizing him, and then reported the incident to the police.

Police stated that Mr. A had no job and was not a so-called sasaeng fan or targeting a specific celebrity’s home for the crime. Nana and her daughter stated that they had never met Mr. A, and Mr. A reportedly stated during police questioning:

“I went into the house thinking no one would be home. I didn’t know it was a celebrity’s residence, and I committed the crime because I didn’t have enough living expenses.”

According to police, Nana and her mother got into a fight with Mr. A, who had broken into their home armed with a weapon. During the fight, Mr. A suffered a laceration to his chin from the weapon. This has raised questions about whether Nana and her mother’s actions constituted self-defense.

Based on statements from the victim and suspect, the police reviewed whether the act in question constituted self-defense under Article 21, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Act. This provision stipulates that an act to defend one’s own or another’s legal interests against “present and unjust infringement” is established when there is “reasonable cause.”

A police official explained:

“The victims suffered actual harm, and in the process of defending themselves, it was investigated that they did not cause serious injury to the suspect. When considering it comprehensively, we determined that the victims’ actions constituted self-defense, so we did not file a case.”

In addition, on the 18th, two days after being detained, Mr. A filed a request for a review of the legality of his detention, claiming that “the police did not inform him of the Miranda rights during the arrest,” but the court dismissed it. The request for a review of the legality of his detention also extended the detention period, and the police explained that they plan to send Mr. A to custody on the 24th.

Meanwhile, Nana’s agency, Sublime, released an official statement, saying:

“Nana’s mother suffered serious injuries and lost consciousness due to the physical attack by the robber, and Nana also suffered physical injuries while trying to escape the crisis. Both of them currently require treatment and absolute rest.”
